Silencing the Sting: Strategies, Resources, and Challenges for Controlling Arizona Bark Scorpions in the Southwestern United States
John Agnew, New Mexico State University
While a variety of scorpions exist across the United States, the Arizona bark scorpion is considered the most medically relevant species. As the name implies, this scorpion primarily resides in Arizona, but populations have been reported in California, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico. Yearly, thousands of envenomations are reported with most occurring in Arizona. Their sting can cause a variety of symptoms, most commonly being pain and numbness near the site of injection. Control of these scorpions is almost exclusively based on the application of insecticide sprays; however, the efficacy of this type of control is controversial. Laboratory studies show that scorpions display behaviors to detect and avoid insecticide residues that help mitigate the insecticides' lethal action. Available resources and strategies will be discussed on how to reduce populations of Arizona bark scorpions in urban environments.
