Register Today - March Train-A-Tech

Mark your calendars for our second Train a Tech which will take place March 27 at the CT AG Station with Kevin Moran from Forshaw. Kevin will be presenting on Termites and Wood Destroying Insects. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM. Opening words will begin at 8:45 AM with the event starting at 9:00 AM -12:00 PM.

Policy Updates

Senate Bills 962 & 963: SGAR & Neonic Ban

Senate Bill 962, which prohibits the use of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) and Senate Bill 963 that bans the use of neonics outside of a structure, were introduced by the Connecticut Joint Environment Committee in early February. These bills would impair the industry's ability to continue the essential work of ensuring that these pests and the deadly diseases they carry are kept out of structures by removing the most effective and products available out of the hands of professionals. A hearing for both bills, and many others, was scheduled for the middle of February. NPMA worked with CTPCA to create Voter Voice campaigns that allowed residents of the state to send messages to members of the state legislature urging them to oppose these bills. Additionally, CTPCA’s State Policy Affairs Representative (SPAR), attend the hearing to submit oral and written testimony in opposition.

Meeting recap:

SB 962 - Senator Harding is looking to alter this bill to only make 2nd generations a restricted use. He is fairly confident that leadership is in agreement on this.

SB 963 - Senator Harding believes the addition to exempt our exterior treatment is doable and will push for it.

HJ 37 - Senator Harding does not believe that this will go anywhere.

NPMA Efforts and Next Steps as the EPA’s Rodenticides PIDs Comments Close

Over the past few months, NPMA staff have been thoroughly reviewing the Proposed Interim Decisions (PIDs) on Rodenticides from the U.S. EPA that were released in November of 2022. We have provided a comprehensive analysis to our membership, and we have formulated and submitted comments that highlight the impacts that the PIDs would have on our industry. In December, NPMA staff requested an extension to the public comment period; however, our request was eventually denied by the Agency. In the few short months we had, NPMA created a process for our members to submit comments within the 75-day comment period. NPMA distributed resources for state associations to submit public comments that emphasize the unique impacts the PIDs will have on member companies in their respective states, including a set of industry talking points and a template for state associations to structure their comments. NPMA also offered our support in drafting and submitting comments to any of the state associations. Comments were due on February 13th, and NPMA would like to thank everyone who weighed in during the public comment period!

Pi Chi Omega Scholarship Program Now Accepting Applications

Pi Chi Omega, the national fraternity for pest control professionals, is looking for qualified applicants for our 6 scholarships! We have been awarding scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in urban and industrial pest management since 1976. To date, more than $240,000 in scholarship support has been provided to more than 140 students. Many of the students that have enjoyed Pi Chi Omega scholarships have become Industry icons, like Bobby Corrigan, who was the very first recipient.

The purpose of the scholarships is to bring young scientifically focused people into our Industry, and it has worked!
